Guardians of Memory

According to the Well-being of the Singapore Elderly (WiSE) study led by the Institute of Mental Health in 2015, one in 10 people aged 60 and above may have dementia. This translates to almost 82,000 people in 2018 and the number is expected to exceed 100,000 in a few years’ time.

Alzheimer’s Disease Association runs multiple centres and programmes including the New Horizon Centres, Family of Wisdom centres, caregiver support, volunteer programmes and other public education work. While we recognise that dementia has no cure, we are engaged in a battle against dementia, fighting to identify and even delay symptoms through our various initiatives. This has been our work for over 25 years since our formation in 1990, and we are grateful to have made an impact so far on many people with dementia, as well as their caregivers.

Back in 2011, Chua Joo Ee, 43, noticed his mother, Mdm Toh Wee, throwing tantrums and displaying bouts of physical aggression. Confused and worried, he brought her to see a psychiatrist, who diagnosed her with vascular dementia. Having no clue about the condition, Joo Ee struggled to care for his mother while balancing the demands of work. He eventually had to quit his job to care for Mdm Toh Wee full-time after she experienced a serious stroke. “I was overwhelmed by my responsibilities and I often felt alone in my journey,” he recalled.

He turned to ADA for help in 2012, placing her under the care of the New Horizon Centre, which afforded him peace of mind. Joo Ee also attended ADA’s Caregiver’s Support Group, where he met like-minded caregivers who share his struggles. With advice from the support team and stress-relieving activities, he was able to find respite from his duties and find support in his caregiving journey.

“I’ve benefitted so much from the programme and I want to continue giving back through my role as a support group facilitator,” said Joo Ee.

The Cost of Dementia

The worldwide cost of dementia is significant. A little over 10 years ago in 2005, dementia cost the world US$315 billion. In five years, that number was just about doubled to US$604 billion. In fact, according to the 2016 World Alzheimer Report by Alzheimer’s Disease International’s (ADI), dementia will be a trillion dollar disease by 2018. If global dementia care were a country, it would be the 18th largest economy in the world, exceeding market values of tech giants Apple and Google.

Locally, things don’t look much better. In 2015, Singapore spent $2.8 billion on dementia care, with over 36% going to formal costs such as healthcare and medication, and almost 65% going to informal costs like time spent on caregivers attending to persons with dementia. Even this number will more than double to $6.5 billion by 2030.

With numbers like these, we cannot battle dementia alone.

A Call for Heroes

As a non-profit organisation, ADA operates with limited resources. The real heroes are the many volunteers and donors who have contributed to our mission. These are the Guardians of Memory. And we’re looking for more heroes to join our fight to protect and guard the memories of persons living with dementia. We’re inviting you to do your part in helping persons with dementia and their caregivers. And since you’re likely to know someone who is living with dementia, this is your battle too.

Your monthly contribution to our Recurring Gift Programme, Guardians of Memory, will go towards funding all of our vital operations, programmes and services. You can download and send us the completed PDF form below, or register directly online at Giving.sg.

As a Guardian of Memory, you will receive:

  • Special invites to public education talks and seminars by ADA
